How important is child dentistry

Here at Diamond Lakes Dental we are committed to helping families achieve optimum oral health. We treat adults and kids here in our family practice. We work to provide tailored treatment plans for each individual patient.

While we encourage everyone to have regular checkups and cleanings, it is very important that children be evaluated for dental decay every six months. A cavity in a child can grow much faster than an adult for a variety of reasons. Once we perform an exam and assess their current situation, the child’s treatment will be aimed at saving baby teeth, if possible, as they are important to holding space for the permanent teeth that will replace them. If the permanent teeth are in place, we want to help the child keep those for a lifetime. In every case, we will strive to offer treatment options when they exist. We will do our absolute best to make sure that you as the parent or caregiver can make an informed decision about the child’s care.

We utilize multiple treatment options to restore teeth such as fillings and stainless steel crowns. Our goal is to remove active decay and help those teeth last as long as possible. If your child does require an extraction at an early age, we have ways to hold the space until the permanent tooth is ready to erupt. Our dental hygienists work with our pediatric patients to teach good brushing and flossing habits. The team approach here at Diamond Lakes Dental helps with continuity of care for the patient.

Managing the care of a pediatric patient can be challenging. Children are often frightened and unsure. We take our time with them and do our best to make them comfortable during the procedure. To aid us in that, we also have nitrous oxide, otherwise known as laughing gas, available in our office. This tool helps to ease your child’s anxiety greatly. We do not restrain children or sedate them in our office. If we feel like your child might need the attention of a pediatric specialist, we will make that recommendation. We want our pediatric patients to be patients for a lifetime. Helping kids grow up with strong healthy teeth is our goal.
